Every person has innate interests and passions, and I recognized from a very young age that creating beauty in my surroundings was something that I wanted to be a part of my life forever. Shortly after I learned to write, I could be found embellishing my letters with little hand-sketched swirls and flowers. Making flower crowns from dandelions I found outside was a staple pastime of my childhood. This inner drive to create has evolved as I grew older and when I was first introduced into the world of floral design in 2016, I quickly realized that I wanted flower arranging to be a part of my life in some way from then on.

I love to create… I’m in my happy place when I’m able to create. My career in floral design started while I was still in college obtaining a business degree. Like a lot of college students, I spent my summer interning in an office environment…and quickly realized that wasn’t how I wanted to live my life. I needed something different, something that would allow me to more fully utilize my creativity and desire to design. When I returned to campus in the fall, I started working part time at a small floral shop. It wasn’t long before I knew I’d found my love and my passion.

My name is Roberta Staggs, founder and lead designer of Hiawathia Floral Design Co. My passion for floristry began with my grandmother during the final stages of Parkinson’s disease. Sharing flowers with her became a way to bring beauty, comfort, and connection during a difficult time. That experience inspired me to create a floral studio rooted in meaning and storytelling. A third-generation florist, some of her earliest childhood memories include processing flowers at her grandmother’s shop in northern Indiana.
