Square Dance Caller

Nina Berry calls square dances throughout the Bay Area and Northern California in the traditional style— no experience necessary, always with a live band. These dances put the focus on the fun and party first, followed by learning something new in the rich tradition of square dancing. Square dancing is a wholesome, sweet way to bring family and friends together for shared joy at your wedding or special event!

I am passionate about accessible, engaging dances that get everybody smiling on the dance floor. Absolutely no experience necessary! I always work with a live band (they bring so much of the magic) and I truly believe in the joyful power of dancing together in circles, squares, and reels to craft shared memories to bring new and old friends together. All dances are 100% taught at the beginning and prompted along the way, meaning I’ll guide you every step of the way, even while the music is going! I also fluidly incorporate gender-neutral calls and a bit of radical square dance history into my set.

    The perfect square dance for our wedding

    Nina and the band members she organized and brought in for our wedding were amazing. Nina picked great songs, and somehow a room full of novices were able to follow along much better than I thought we would! Everyone had such a blast, and Nina's ungendered calling meant that all my guests were fully included, whoever they were and whoever they were dancing with. Nina was great at communicating beforehand and she and the band members were really patient with us and friendly and flexible. Bringing in a square dance caller and string band was the one thing I really splurged on in our low-budget wedding, and I would definitely do it all over again.

    Made our day perfect!

    We didn't have to worry about a thing with Nina and her band from start to finish - they were professional, so very fun the day of, and communication was great. Wedding vendors can be such a crapshoot but this was so very easy and SO FUN. People are still talking about the square dancing as a highlight of our wedding. Nina went above and beyond to help us come up with a family dance in lieu of more traditional dances and it was really so special and one of our favorite moments. Would definitely recommend!

    Fun, Inclusive Square Dance Caller!

    My partner and I asked Nina to bring musicians and call square and contra dances at our wedding reception last November. It was wonderful. We wanted an alternative to a wedding band that was unique and interesting and affordable and charming and down-to-earth, and that went with our summer camp vibe, and Nina really delivered. Almost none of our guests had any prior experience at all square or contra dancing, but Nina knew exactly how to introduce the dance steps and keep everyone engaged. She was quick to respond to the needs of our group, and read the room brilliantly. To our amazement and delight, almost everyone participated, and multiple people told us afterwards that the square dancing was their favorite part of the wedding. Nina called the dances in a way that avoided traditional gender roles and accommodated dancers who didn't have a partner, allowing all of our guests to feel included in the fun. We are particularly appreciative of that. We only had her call for an hour, but we could have very easily and happily done more! In the weeks and days leading up to the wedding, Nina was very easy to communicate with, professional, and thoughtful. I could not recommend her higher for anyone looking for an experienced barn dance caller.

    A big ol' YEE HAW for Nina Berry Square Dance!

    Nina Berry is a delight to work with! From our very first email exchange she was enthusiastic and professional and I felt confident she would make our dreams of a fun community square dance with all our friends and family come true! And she did indeed. It's not easy to shepherd a group of newbie dancers, but she made everyone feel comfortable and created a fun, relaxed atmosphere. There were huge smiles all around and everyone commented afterwards what a great time they had. Nina's band Gettin' Good was filled with equally as lovely and talented women, and it was a joy to be able to dance to their lively music. Nina and her band made it a truly memorable and joyful event and we whole heartedly recommend them!

    Nina is the best!!

    I highly recommend hiring Nina to make your wedding the best it can be. Square dancing is such a fun activity that will be sure to make everyone smile and be happy. I have been to many square dances that Nina has called at and she is amazing and commanding the crowd and making sure everyone has the best time possible. Please hire Nina!
